Barnaby is flying high with extreme weekend challenge

15 Oct 2013

It is not every day voters can witness a politician freefalling towards the earth at 14,000 feet.

But in what could prove to be his riskiest post-election maneuver, Federal Member for New England Barnaby Joyce will confirm his extreme commitment to the Tamworth Festival of Flight by thrusting himself out of a plane as part of a skydiving challenge at the weekend.

Mr Joyce, who has leapt from a plane only once before, said while he was not exactly relishing the skydiving opportunity, he wanted to take part in the hope it would draw attention to the important local festival.

“After taking some big knocks and putting my hand in plaster at the Rugby Reunion Carnival at Armidale a fortnight ago, I thought my extreme activities might have come to an end for the year,” Mr Joyce said.

“And leaping from a perfectly safe plane was not exactly on my radar when I first signed up for a career in politics.”

“But it was a difficult offer to turn down when the festival of flight organisers asked me to take part. The event is sure to attract plane spotters from across the state and I am looking forward to seeing the best of the aviation industry that Tamworth has to offer.”

“I just hope it won’t be a Greens voter who will be packing my parachute.”

*Presented by the Tamworth Aero club and the Rotary Club of Tamworth, the inaugural Festival of Flight is touching down at the Tamworth Airport on October 19th and 20th with a spectacular air show of planes from cutting edge to the classic, aerobics, skydiving, joy flights and career advice.
