Take time for Carers Week in the New England Electorate

23 Sep 2015

FEDERAL Member for New England, Barnaby Joyce said the role and importance of Australia’s 2.7 million unpaid carers, including those in the New England Electorate will be recognised during the week of 11 to 17 October.

National Carers’ Week is a timely and effective way to demonstrate how you can ‘Show You Care’ and raise community awareness of the efforts of the unpaid carers in our communities, Mr Joyce said.

He said Carers’ Australia’s mission is to improve carers’ lives by ensuring that the supports and services they need are in place, increasing community awareness and championing their voice in the political landscape.

“There are a substantial number of carers across the New England Electorate and it is important for them to know that there are services and information available to support their role as a carer,” Mr Joyce said.

Home and Community Care Team Leader for Tamworth Regional Council, Erin Mercer, said the New England Carer Support Service had between 40 and 50 active carers providing support for the frail aged and people with a disability.

She said the New England Carer Support Service provided drop-in support at the Tamworth Community Centre as well as counselling and helping carers to find extra support for their role.

“We’ll be holding a special Carers’ lunch on 14 October to celebrate Carers’ Week,” Ms Mercer said.

Anyone seeking further information on the New England Carers’ Support Service can contact the Tamworth Community Centre on 6766 4480.
