Joint Media Release

  • The Regions 2030: Unlocking Opportunity regional policy statement released.

  • Publication sets out the Government’s agenda for regional Australia towards 2030—working to make regional Australia an even better place to live, work and invest.

  • The Regions 2030 agenda encompasses the five key focus areas of Jobs and Economic Development; Infrastructure; Health; Education; and Communications.

  • Regional Australia is a key driver of the Australian economy.

Residents of the New England Electorate will continue to experience the benefits of the Coalition Government’s commitment to regional Australia, as outlined in a new regional policy document released today.

The release of Regions 2030: Unlocking Opportunity coincides with the 2017-18 Federal Budget, with the Regions 2030 agenda set to create jobs, innovation and economic growth in regional and remote communities as projects announced in the Budget get underway.

Speaking at Broken Hill today, the Minister for Regional Development Fiona Nash outlined the Government’s action plan to see regional Australia reach its potential.

“Regional development is about having a vision for what we want regional communities to look like in 20 years. It’s about making sure we create both careers and jobs in our communities so our children and grandchildren can lead fulfilling lives. It’s about developing ways our young people can receive an excellent education without leaving the community they grew up in,” said Minister Nash.

“It’s about building the kinds of communities our children and grandchildren either want to stay in or come back to.

“Regional development is about much more than just grants programs.

“It’s also about lifting the profile of regional Australia and creating awareness of the fact every Australian owes their lifestyle to regional Australia.

“Regional Australia provides the water city people drink, the milk on their breakfast, the meat and vegetables for dinner, the gas to cook dinner and heat water, and the electricity which powers their households.

“Investing in our regions is essential for Australia - strong regions mean a strong nation.

“A ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to developing regional policy does not work. Regions 2030 focuses on working with communities to meet their economic and social needs, which will help to improve life for rural, regional and remote Australians.”

Deputy Prime Minister and Member for New England, Barnaby Joyce, said it was a positive move for the local area that the Coalition Government has developed a comprehensive regional agenda that partners with local communities to make regions even better places to live, work and invest in.

“It’s our local community, we want to drive investment and support the opportunities that we know will make a significant difference here in our region,” Mr Joyce said.

“Health, education, jobs and economic development, infrastructure and communications are the five key areas of focus for Regions 2030, which is particularly pleasing to see.

“These are amongst the biggest drivers of a community’s success, and it’s great to see the Coalition Government will focus investment in these areas.

“This announcement follows the release of the 2017-18 Federal Budget reinforcing our commitment to unlock the potential in the New England Electorate.

“This includes the delivery of significant road infrastructure projects such as $55 million towards the New England Highway-Bolivia Hill Realignment, $10 million towards the New England Highway-Tenterfield Heavy Vehicle Bypass, $10 million to upgrade the Liverpool Plains Regional Water Supply, $3.5 million for the upgrade of the Jewry Street Bridge in Tamworth and $12 million towards the Mt Lindesay Road -Legume to Woodenbong.”

"This goes hand-in-hand with projects soon or already underway, such as the $65 million delivered for the Scone Bypass, $5.4 million for the MR358 road between Merriwa and Willow Tree and the $1.56 million for the Appleby Lane upgrade in Tamworth.”

“I am looking forward to working with the broader community so we can deliver improved outcomes for the entire region.”
