Deputy Prime Minister and Member for New England Barnaby Joyce, has welcomed Australian Government funding for a local project to honour Australia’s wartime history.
Mr Joyce said Ebor Community Group will receive $4,000 to construct a new war memorial as part of the Australian Government’s Saluting Their Service grants program.
“It’s important that our community continues to honour the service and sacrifice of the men and women who serve in defence of our nation,” Mr Joyce said.
“Local organisations, such as Ebor Community Group, are ensuring that we honour our military history in ways that are meaningful to our community.
“The new memorial will honour the Ebor township and Guy Fawkes District residents who served in all wars.
“I congratulate the group on its project and look forward to seeing it when completed.”
Ebor Community Group secretary Bryson Wade said the organisation has been running for about two years and one of its first priorities was to re-establish a local war memorial after the original memorial board disappeared decades ago.
He thanked Mr Joyce and the Australian Government for their assistance and said the new memorial is already under construction at the local cemetery. When complete it will feature a large granite memorial stone, flagpole, paving and gardens. The new plaque will list not only those who died but about 80 names of all who have served from Ebor, across all conflicts.
Mr Joyce encouraged local groups to apply for funding to support community projects that honoured our military history.
The Saluting Their Service Community Commemorative Grants program provides up to $4,000 for an individual project. It is a rolling grants program, so applications are accepted at any time.
Local community organisations interested in applying for funding under the Saluting Their Service grants program should contact the Department of Veterans’ Affairs’ Commemorative Grants team on 1800 555 254 or email: firstname.lastname@example.org.
