New England urged to apply for Young Endeavour

26 Jul 2018

Young Australians in the New England looking for an adventure out of the ordinary can apply for a voyage in Sail Training Ship (STS) Young Endeavour.

Member for New England, Barnaby Joyce, said a voyage in Young Endeavour gives participants skills for life and the chance to test themselves in a challenging new environment out on the open water.

“This country of ours was born out a sense of adventure and that’s just what a trip on the Young Endeavour can provide for our local youth,” Mr Joyce said.

“Away from their iPads, their Facebook and their Twitter followers, these young adults are forced to step outside their comfort zone and learn real life skills like communication, teamwork and leadership, which helps prepare them for the workforce.

“The program, delivered by Royal Australian Navy personnel, instils in those individuals on board a desire to contribute to society.”

During each voyage, 24 young participants aged 16–23 from across Australia are taught the skills required to sail a square-rigged tall ship – including how to navigate, keep watch, cook in the galley, take the helm and climb the 30 metre mast to work aloft, setting and furling sails.

Young Endeavour conducts approximately 20 voyages each year, typically on the east coast of Australia.  Now in its 30th year, the internationally recognised program has benefitted more than 13,300 young Australians

“With the ship soon to sail north from Sydney to tropical North Queensland, now is a great time for young people from the New England to apply for a voyage and gain memories and skills to last a lifetime,” Mr Joyce said.

“The program is open to all young Australians.  Businesses and community groups from Tamworth to Tenterfield and throughout the electorate can provide scholarships for eligible local participants,” he said.
