Kootingal funded for community safety upgrade

20 Feb 2019

Member for New England, Barnaby Joyce, has announced the Coalition Government will provide $31,960 for the Kootingal and District Preschool Inc. community safety project.

The funding has been committed under Round 3 of the Coalition’s $30 million Safer Communities Fund.

The funding will allow the school to install CCTV cameras and appropriate lighting in the local community precinct which features the skate park, community hall and community reserve.

“One of the basic rights of any community, including the people in Kootingal, is the right to feel safe on the streets in their home town,” Mr Joyce said.

“These new security measures for Kootingal will help strengthen the region’s CCTV network following the $1 million upgrade we delivered last year for more CCTV cameras in the Tamworth shire.

“All this in addition to nearly $60,000 we announced recently for more community projects in Kootingal including an upgrade for the pony club and renovation of the Kootingal Amphitheatre.”

The Safer Communities Fund delivers on the Coalition’s ongoing commitment to keep Australians safe and secure.

Only safe communities can be strong and prosperous, and the best way to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour is to prevent it happening.

The Safer Communities Fund, a 2016 election commitment, initially received $40 million to support local communities to address crime and anti-social behaviour and to protect organisations that may face risks from racial or religious intolerance. This further commitment brings the total amount available under the Safer Communities Fund to $70 million between 2016-17 and 2019-20.

The Minister for Home Affairs Peter Dutton said that all Australians should feel safe and secure when their communities come together.

The Coalition has now committed $138 million across Australia to deliver on various strategies designed to strengthen our communities.

“The Coalition will continue to assist local councils and organisations to address crime and anti-social behaviour and make our nation safer,” Mr Dutton said.
