  • Local Sporting Champions – grants to assist representative athletes.
  • Women Leaders in Sport – grants of $3,000 - $20,000 for individuals, organisations – Applications close 23 September

Local Sporting Champions continues to support aspiring young sportspeople more than ever before, with Member for New England, Barnaby Joyce, encouraging families to apply for the next round of the popular grants program by 30 September 2019.

The Coalition Government’s Local Sporting Champions program provides financial assistance to aspiring young athletes, coaches and officials between the ages of 12-18 attending eligible state, national or international sporting championships.

Mr Joyce said Local Sporting Champions program, managed by Sport Australia, has already supported hundreds of talented young sportspeople and their families across the New England in recent years.

“In the last funding round alone, we delivered 35 successful grants totalling $19,750 to athletes in our electorate,” Mr Joyce said.

“There is no doubt we have a wealth of sports talent here in the New England but where you live should not determine how successful you are in your representative pursuits.

“That’s where this program comes into play, assisting rural and regional athletes cover costs associated with attending representative sporting competitions such as entry fees, travel, accommodation, uniforms and equipment.”

Local Sporting Champions continues to grow, with the Coalition Government announcing a funding boost in 2018-19 of $11.8 million over four years. Funding starts at $500 per grant, with additional provisions for longer distance travel.

“I would be thrilled to see as much of that $11.8 million being awarded to athletes in the New England,” Mr Joyce said.

To be considered for the next assessment period, applications must be received by 30 September, 2019. For more information on Local Sporting Champions grants, including the eligibility criteria and to apply, visit www.sportaus.gov.au/lsc

Applications for the 2020 program close 23 September 2019.
