Barnaby Joyce delivers on Safer Streets funding for New England electorate

14 May 2014

THE Coalition Government has delivered on its commitment to address crime and anti-social behaviour, Member for New England Barnaby Joyce said today.

The 2014-15 Federal Budget includes funding under the Coalition Government’s Safer Streets Programme, where proceeds of crime will be directed to fund local crime prevention projects including $500,000 for closed circuit television cameras and lighting for Tamworth.

Mr Joyce welcomed the Coalition Government’s $500,000 investment to improve security in the local community.

Mr Joyce said he remained committed to delivering on his election promises and was extremely pleased his representations to the Minister had resulted in a successful outcome for Tamworth.

“This funding commitment will make the streets of our city safer,” Mr Joyce said

Tamworth Regional Council Mayor, Cr Col Murray applauded the Budget announcement.

“This really is a significant step in giving back the streets of Tamworth to the community,” Cr Murray said.

“In the last decade or so families have stopped going down the street at night,” he said.

Mr Joyce said the funding will allow the community to change the way its social activities take place.

“The tough economic climate we inherited from Labor makes sourcing money from the Federal Government difficult at this time,” he said.

“But this funding was an election commitment, and my election commitments will be met.”

Minister for Justice Michael Keenan congratulated Barnaby Joyce on the hard work undertaken to secure the funding for local communities.

“Our Government committed to help local communities deliver effective local solutions to crime hot-spots and anti-social behaviour through the $50 million Safer Streets programme and we are delivering on that commitment in this Budget.

“All Australians have the right to feel safe and secure in their community and the Safer Streets Programme will help achieve that,” Mr Keenan said.
