FEDERAL Member for New England, Barnaby Joyce has welcomed news of the launch of the highly anticipated book, Armidale 150 Years.

Mr Joyce, who studied at the University of New England, said Armidale was a key centre in his electorate and the celebration of the sesquicentenary early next month was an important benchmark in the community.

He congratulated the coordinator of the book Poh Woodland and her work in compiling the comprehensive collection of information and photos spread across 280 pages presented in colour and hardcover bound.

She said the book was a celebration of what the community of Armidale had achieved during the last 150 years.

“It really does cover everything, from early settlement right through today,” she said.

Ms Woodland said apart from the images the book also contained short essays and articles on significant events during the past 150 years in Armidale, all contributed by about 60 volunteers.

“It covers community, service and sporting clubs in the city as well,” she said.

Armidale 150 Years will be officially launched by former long-serving Mayor Doug Hewitt at the Armidale Town Hall on Friday, 4 April.

Ms Woodland said only 50 limited edition copies of the book were available to buy and history buffs were urged to move quickly to secure a copy.  Pre-paid orders can be made at the Armidale Dumaresq Council’s Civic Administration Building at 135 Rusden Street between the hours of 8.30am and 4.30pm.
