FEDERAL Member for New England, Barnaby Joyce, was able to catch up with one of Tingha’s favourite sons, Preston Campbell, at a Friends of Rugby League event in Parliament House on Wednesday.

Mr Joyce said he was a long-time admirer of the former Gold Coast Titan and now community worker.

“The Tingha Tigers have made a great contribution to the National Rugby League with Preston Campbell and Nathan Blacklock part of those prestigious alumni,” Mr Joyce said.

He used the function as an opportunity to hear of some of the latest efforts of Project Preston, a program to help disadvantaged children in Preston’s home town of Tingha.

“Preston’s community work is an inspiration to us all,” he said.

Mr Joyce was able to catch up with a former University of New England colleague at the function.

“Don Furner (Canberra Raiders Chief Executive Officer) was at UNE when I was there,” he said

Becoming the Member for New England has also precipitated a change in Rugby League club loyalties for Mr Joyce.

A long-time fan of the North Queensland Cowboys, Mr Joyce has shifted his allegiance to the Newcastle Knights just down the New England Highway.

“If Wayne Bennett (the Knight’s coach) can do it, so can I,” Mr Joyce said.

“I look forward to being able to watch the Knights in the not too distant future,” he said.

“The last game I saw the Cowboys play was against the Knights.  Hopefully the next game I see will be the Knights play the Cowboys but as a Knights’ fan.”
