New England National Park will be among the areas to share in the Federal Coalition Government’s $61.7 million budget spending on environmental restoration and recovery measures through the $1 billion COVID Relief Fund.
The new investment includes $2.7 million to upgrade to Gondwana Rainforests of Australia national parks, which includes New England National Park, and is designed to create jobs, boost local tourism and preserve the environment.
Member for New England, Barnaby Joyce, said the funding will assist in refurbishment of walking tracks across seven sites, major upgrades of visitor accommodation as well as new interpretative signage and information panels.
“As we look to recover from the impact of COVID-19, these projects will help to drive economic growth in the New England and enhance our local assets for the future,” Mr Joyce said.
Minister for the Environment Sussan Ley said that the announcements showed the Coalition Government is delivering practical and lasting environmental outcomes.
“These initiatives invest in projects that sustain jobs and local businesses, improve facilities and encourage people to visit regional communities when they are able to do so,” Minister Ley said.
“We want to bring people closer to our wonderful heritage places/natural environment and we want to help them be a part of protecting and preserving our environment for generations to come.”
