Tamworth a step closer to Qantas academy

22 Jun 2018

Member for New England, Barnaby Joyce, said today’s announcement of Tamworth in the shortlist to host the Qantas Pilot Academy was a major win for the region.

“We’re now a real of chance of securing this academy for Tamworth which would be a huge boost for jobs and our economy in the New England,” Mr Joyce said.

“We knew Tamworth would be in the box seat for this with our $2 million commitment to upgrade the airport’s instrument landing system no doubt being a major drawcard.

“But what we also have in Tamworth is the capacity to give employees a good standard of living, we have clear airspace to operate and an airport precinct with room to grow – all this within a few hundred kilometres of one of Australia’s busiest cities, Sydney.

“I wanted to make sure that as the BAE contract with the Australian Air Force came to a close at Tamworth that our city moved to a better position and this is a big step towards that.

“I congratulate Tamworth Regional Council on its progression as one of only three locations in NSW shortlisted for the academy and among nine nation-wide.

“Although unsuccessful, I also thank Armidale and Glen Innes for throwing their hats in the ring on behalf of the New England to host the centre.

“I have no doubt we have the means and capacity to see this project through to the finish and bring true decentralisation to Tamworth.”

The Qantas Pilot Academy is due open in 2019.
