Tamworth RSL Sub-Branch a winner with BEST grant, says Joyce

FEDERAL Member for New England, Barnaby Joyce has congratulated the Tamworth RSL Sub-Branch for its $27,429.34 success in the Building Excellence in Support and Training Grants Programme.

Mr Joyce said the grant was part of Round 17 of the programme which distributed $3.778 million on behalf  of the Federal Government.

“BEST grants are an important part of the Government’s commitment to support ex-service organisation pensions officers, welfare officers and advocates and it is vital to the provision of support to veterans seeking compensation and their families,” Mr Joyce said.

He said in line with the Government’s ongoing commitment to the veteran and defence communities and the Government’s promise to restore BEST funding to 2010 levels, an additional amount of $1 million in funding has been provided for BEST this year.

Tamworth RSL Sub-Branch Secretary, JayneMcCarthy said the funding would ensure, “we keep our doors open for the year”.

Ms McCarthy said the organisation’s pensions and welfare officers and advocates rely on the funding to continue to support the many returned service-men and service-women who live in and around Tamworth.

She said the Sub-Branch had been busy with recent commemorations for the 100th anniversary of the Anzac landings and other WWI-associated events.

Currently the Sub-Branch is in the midst of planning for the 70th anniversary of Victory in the Pacific [VP] Day on 15 August when the nation commemorates Japan's acceptance of the Allied demand for unconditional surrender on 14 August 1945.

For Australians, it meant the Second World War was finally over.
